Abstract

It is a review study of information sources for research on the concept of style in Czech bourgeois schools in the period of the First Republic (1918–1939). It primarily focuses on placing the topic in a broader historical and pedagogical context. The study fi rst defi nes the signifi cance of the issue under investigation in the context of contemporary Czech language didactics and presents textbooks as the main source of research. It then presents a two-stage methodology involving the reconstruction of the contemporary context and the analysis of primary sources. The focus of the text is a detailed description of the socio-historical background of Czechoslovak education of the period. The author traces the development from Herbartianism through the reform efforts of the 1920s to the reform proposals of the 1930s.
