The Czech curriculum for primary and lower-secondary education is currently undergoing a major revision. However, the question still remains how successful the last reform was – because numerous reflections suggest that not particularly. The paper discusses research conducted through the focus group method with a group of teachers. It examines their ideas about the aims and content of Czech language teaching at the lower-secondary school, compares these ideas with the expected outcomes defi ned by the current curriculum (RVP ZV, 2023) and with the draft revision of the FEP (draft version of RVP ZV, 2024). The results suggest that the weaknesses of curriculum reform may not lie in the lack of teacher participation, but very importantly in their inadequate external support. Thus, the text also provides insight into the circumstances needed to enhance the success of the process.
